Krynauw was born in Somerset East in 1989. He has a background in acting, and studied drama at Stellenbosch University, where he holds a Bachelor's Degree in Drama. In 2010 Krynauw uprooted himself, discarding his thespian past in a resolution to become a painter. His process of 'becoming' a painter became a pivotal act of portraiture, a performance unfolding as a body of work, thematically drifting into other bodies of work, notably Roelof van Wyk's "Young Afrikaner's" series featured in the 2011 V&A show "From Black and White to Full Colour".
The seed that merited Krynauw's departure from acting was planted a little over a year ago after collaborating with Frans Hamman, a stage director and close friend, on a production of Sarah Kane's 4.48 Psychosis. Krynauw was asked to produce a drawing that would serve as a video projection framing the backdrop to the production. It was here that he realized his desire to be an artist. Krynauw's background in acting allowed him to measure the importance of performance in painting.
The 'becoming' of a painter converts portraiture and performance into auxiliary elements. The multimedia artwork made for the stage production, along with some peripheral drawings and paintings which grabbed van Wyk's attention, and so the stage was set. Van Wyk would become Krynauw's patron and mentor, also photographically documenting the development of the young actor towards becoming a painter.
