OLAF BISSCHOFF
Olaf's professional art career started as a studio apprentice to South African artist Norman Catherine in 1997. In the 10 years that followed his works have won various corporate art awards (Absa's L'Atelier, Sasol's New Signatures, PPC Young Concrete Sculptor awards) and form part of various private and state-owned collections (including the Taiwanese Taichung Cultural Government Commission).
Working in oils with technical finesse and intimate focus, Olaf Bisschoff's muse lies firmly with landscapes. But the true edge in his work lies not in the mountains and skies but rather in the mindset of the viewer. His first sell-out solo "Terra Incognita" (2008) probed the romantic concepts of the invented landscape and its illusive ability to evoke melancholy, longing and recognition. His latest body of work "Chaos" aspires to change the cycle of landscape painting and makes the outcome of the new works as unpredictable as the weather. Bisschoff's focus now falls squarely on the fragility of the viewer's mindset.
